Veeam has been the global market leader for backup in professional environments for years. What makes Veeam special: application-aware backup (understands SQL Server, Exchange, Active Directory, Hyper-V, VMware, Proxmox), fast recovery (Instant VM Recovery — VM runs directly from backup while data migrates in the background), and SureBackup — automatic testing whether backups really work.

The 3-2-1-1-0 rule

A proper backup strategy follows this rule: 3 copies of the data (original + 2 backups) — 2 different media types (e.g. disk + tape or disk + cloud) — 1 copy offsite (outside the site, against fire and theft) — 1 copy immutable (cannot be overwritten, against ransomware) — 0 errors during recovery (regularly tested). With Veeam and Object First Ootbi we technically implement this.

Veeam for practice IT

In practices we typically back up: the practice server with the PMS database, file shares with practice documents, possibly a mail server, possibly a phone system server. Backup frequency: hourly incremental backups during opening hours, full backup overnight. Retention: 30 days daily, 12 months monthly, 7 years yearly (for accounting).

Veeam for critical infrastructure

For critical-infra operators it gets more serious: faster backup frequencies (every 15 minutes possible), redundant Veeam servers, replication to a second data centre, regular recovery tests, documentation of all backup jobs for audit. We can also implement BSI-Grundschutz-compliant backup strategies.
